Fayette County Clerk

Candidates

  • Dawn Perkins (R) - This candidate failed to respond to our survey.

  • Susan Lamb (D) - Candidate survey responses below.

1. What would you do to improve voter turnout and engagement? Do you support expanded early and absentee voting? Do you support extending the voter registration deadline?

Lamb - Yes, I do support expanded early and absentee voting, and I think that is one of the single most impactful things we can do to encourage turnout.

As County Clerk I have expanded voting centers to make casting a ballot more accessible than ever, and will continue to work with other city officials to ensure that all areas of the city can enjoy this convenience.

There are technical limitations to consider when setting a registration deadline, and I would encourage state officials to make that deadline as late as it feasibly can be.

2. What would you do to improve access to voting for people who are detained pre-trial in jail but still eligible to vote?

Lamb - Pre-trial incarceration is an explicitly approved condition for absentee ballot eligibility, and I believe strongly in making polls accessible to all eligible voters. Earlier this year, I worked with the League of Women Voters in support of a program that registers eligible people who are currently detained at the Lexington Correctional Complex, and I support their continued efforts to do so.

3. Do you support Kentucky’s closed primary system? Why or why not?

Lamb - I do not support restricting voters in their choice of candidate at any point in the electoral process.

4. Do you support a constitutional amendment restoring voting rights to the tens of thousands of Kentuckians with felonies in their past who have completed their sentence? Why or why not?

Lamb - Absolutely, the right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and too many adults are still living with the outsized consequences of decades old decisions. If a person has completed their sentence and has been determined ready for re-entry to society, the restoration of voting rights should be part of that.

5. How would you improve recruitment and retention of poll workers and other election personnel?

Lamb - Similar to my approach with voters, I try to make everyone feel included and valued. To that end, I have spent the last several months learning the ins and outs of our electoral process from some very dedicated public servants, and I hope in the coming years to hear directly from them which processes are troublesome and how we might work to improve them.

6. Some election deniers claim, without evidence, that the 2020 presidential election was called incorrectly and that Donald Trump won. Do you believe that the outcome of the 2020 presidential election was called accurately?

Lamb - Yes I do.
